Mercer Falls to The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC - Mercer went 0-3 against The Citadel at their second match of the weekend. The teams were evenly matched throughout the sets with both teams having over a hundred attacks with Mercer having one more kill as Mercer (41-40). Paige Wagers lead the teams during this game with 11 kills and second in points (13). The Bears finished the night with a .222 HIT% and 51 digs as a team. The Citadel hitting percentage was .301 with 103 attacks in the match.
Set One | The teams stayed close to each other until The Citadel went on a 6-0 scoring run to take the lead. Mercer trailed 8-15 at the first time out. Big kills from Lillian Beardsley and Rachel Bell wore down the lead to 18-21 at the third timeout. Mercer could not keep up the momentum and lost the set, 21-25.
Set Two | Mercer took an early 5-3 lead but trailed 7-12 at the first time out. Wagers picked up four more kills with assists from Kiera McCarles. The Citadel did not give up their lead even with multiple attacks from Annie Karle and took the set 25-22. 
Set Three | The Citadel took an early 4-0 lead and continued to hold a lead for the rest of the set. Karle and Wagers picked up more kills during the set and only trailed 6-13 at the first time out. Mercer gained momentum and went on a 3-0 scoring run. The Citadel retaliated with a 5-1 scoring run that furthered their lead. Abbey Havrilla picked up a service ace later in the set with Wagers picking up her 11th kill of the night. The Citadel kept their lead and took the set 25-16.
UP NEXT 
Mercer will continue conference play in Birmingham, AL against Samford University on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at 7p.m.
