
Mercer Drops First Game in Las Vegas to Colorado State, 79-51

Mercer didn't make any threes, while Colorado State made 11
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A rough shooting night - especially from behind the arc - plagued Mercer (2-2, 0-0) as it dropped a 79-51 decision to Mountain West member Colorado State (4-1, 0-0), Friday night in the Las Vegas Invitational.
The Bears shot 27 percent from the field and couldn't knock down a three-pointer on the night. Colorado State came into the game averaging 79.0 points per game along with 12.0 three-pointers made per game. The Rams finished right on that pace with 11 made three-pointers in the game.
Jaron Dougherty had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Nigeria Harkless led the Bears in scoring with 12 points and had four rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first five minutes featured back-and-forth action with neither team able to use a run to pull away early. A jump shot by Amoria Neal-Tysor brought the Bears within one at 11-10. However, Colorado State closed the first quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 20-12 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter Colorado State had it's best shooting quarter of the game at 43.8 percent from the field and stretched its lead to 39-14 before a jump shot from Enjulina Gonzalez.
The Bears came out to start the second half executing better on each end of the floor and went on a 7-0 run that was jump started by an and one from Jaron Dougherty to make it a 45-30 game. Mercer outscored Colorado State 17-16 in the quarter.
The Bears were more aggressive in getting to the rim instead of settling for jump shots in the second half as evident by their 19 free throws in the second half compared to just four in the first.
