Nine-run second propels Mercer to 15-2 triumph

MACON, Ga. – Closing out the two-game set with Florida A&M, Mercer swept its second consecutive series with a decisive 15-2 win on Wednesday night.

The Mercer (5-0) offense exploded for nine in the second inning and tallied 14 at-bats as they batted around and then some. Bill Knight and Angelo DiSpigna each brought home two on doubles. In the latter half of the inning, Jozsef Rohrbacher launched his first home run as a Bear.

Ryan Lobus (1-0) tallied his first career win in the outing.

An inning later, Bill Knight launched a solo shot out to left as Mercer upped their lead to 10.

In the fifth, Treyson Hughes launched a solo shot just over the wall in right center as Mercer increased their advantage to 11. Colby Thomas slugged one to left at the very next at-bat to up the lead to a dozen.

The sixth featured one more run as Ryan Archibald crossed home plate when Hughes was plunked with a ball. Mercer plated another when William Mapes scored on an error by the left fielder.

Even though the offense gave Lobus some generous run support early, he did his part on the bump by fanning five over 3.0 innings pitched. Beau Healy, Colton Casper, Luke Sutko, Holton McGaha and Garrett Sloan all pitched in relief.

Every pitcher for Mercer recorded at least one punchout.

FAMU's Shawn Host was charged with the loss after surrendering 10 runs (all earned), 11 hits and giving a pair of free passes in just 3.0 innings of work.

Mercer will return to action this Friday when they will welcome SIUE to OrthoGeorgia Park for a weekend series. First pitch against the Cougars is slated for 6 p.m.
