Mercer takes first game of series with SIUE
MACON, Ga. – Keeping with the pattern of the week, the Mercer bats came alive early en route to their sixth consecutive win on Friday night, 5-3, over SIUE.
Â
The Bears (6-0) swiped two bags (including home) and tacked on three runs in the first inning to set the tone of the game over the visiting Cougars (1-3) at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Colby Thomas stole home while Bill Knight advanced to second to break open the scoring. A few batters later, Le Basset singled to short and brought in Knight and moved Collin Price 90 feet to second into scoring position. Following a fielder's choice at first, Price moved to third and scored when David Burke singled to center just one batter later.
Â
In the second, Mercer tacked on two without recording a hit. The offense took advantage of two errors by the Cougars as they built their lead to five. SIUE countered with two home runs in a three-batter stretch to get back into the contest in their half of the third.
Â
While Josh Harlow (2-0) picked up his second win in as many attempts, he was charged with both runs given up on three hits but fanned seven in 6.0 innings of work. Jackson Kelley entered in relief and struck out six in the final 3.0 frames and came away with the save in the opportunity.
COACH GIBSON'S THOUGHTS
Â
SIUE's Noah Matheny (0-1) took the loss as he yielded five runs – just one unearned – in addition to giving up four hits and three free passes in 5.0 innings.
With runners in scoring position, Mercer batted an impressive .333, but left five on base.
Â
Mercer will look to win its third series of the young season tomorrow with first pitch with the Cougars set for 2 p.m.
