Mercer uses four homers to beat Saint Peter's on Friday

MACON, Ga. – On a cold, dreary Friday afternoon, Mercer's bats were quite hot – exploding for seven runs in the first en route to a 17-4 rout of Saint Peter's to keep up the strong start.

In the first inning, the Bears (13-1) plated seven behind RBI singles from Le Bassett and Zach Turner, a Treyson Hughes grand slam and a Colby Thomas sacrifice fly. Additionally, the Bears batted around and even saw three make a pair of plate appearances in the frame.

Following a quiet second, Colby Thomas connected on a home run to left center that brought two more in the third. St. Peter's countered with two runs after a leadoff two-bagger to left center and a towering home run in consecutive at-bats.

An inning later, William Mapes drove in Trevor Austin on a single to left to get a run back for a 11-2 lead. Following an Antonio Brown single, Thomas crushed a homer to left center for the 14-2 advantage. Mercer upped their lead to 13 when Bill Knight touched home when Trevor Austin got the free pass to first.

In the Bears' last frame to bat, Ryan Archibald launched his first longball of the season on a shot to right center to up the advantage to 17-2. The Peacocks grabbed two more runs back in the top of the ninth.

Picking up the win, Josh Harlow (4-0) fanned eight across 4.0 innings, but surrendered the pair of runs off the fourth inning longball. The freshman righty from North Carolina also yielded three hits and walked two. Kyle Mahady was charged

Archibald's eighth inning homer was his first of the season. As a team, Mercer clubbed four longballs in the effort.
