Mercer drops battle to No. 2 Tar Heels
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In just the second time away from home, Mercer fell to second-ranked North Carolina at Dorrance Field.
Hailey Rhatigan's hat trick and assist led the Bears, Chloe Schaeffer added a pair of scores while Kileigh Casey and Hannah Lind each tallied a goal. Rhatigan's first goal quickly countered the Tar Heels' opening goal just 2:34 into the game.
"I'm very proud of our team today," exclaimed Head Coach Samantha Eustace. "We felt like they battled hard against the current No. 2 program in the country. We got in a bit of a hole in the first quarter and battled back for the next three staying within two goals of UNC in each quarter. I have so much respect for (North Carolina) Coach Jenny Levy and her championship program. We will learn from this game today and continue to get better!"
Lind led Mercer with a pair of ground balls in an effort to grab momentum from the Tar Heels.
Erin Degnan and Rhatigan evenly combined for four draw control wins and Gerold, Schaeffer and Shannon Urey each caused a turnover. The Bears' defense forced the second-ranked to 16 turnovers in the game.
Iseabel Cryne stopped three shots in 60 minutes between the pipes for the Orange & Black.
Mercer will be off for two weeks before their Big South debut in a road bout with Presbyterian on March 25.
