Mercer collects 11th consecutive, downs UNCG
The homestanding Spartans (14-21, 0-5 SoCon) jumped to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning before Mercer (30-5, 5-0 SoCon) responded with four over the next three frames.
Antonio Brown dropped a blooper in between a trio of UNCG fielders and plated Angelo DiSpigna for the tying run in the top of the second. Moments later, Treyson Hughes roped a two-bagger to left center and drove in Brown for the lead. An inning later, Colby Thomas slugged a solo homer to deep left for the 3-1 advantage. Mercer brought their advantage to three when
Hughes crossed home on an error.
UNCG halved the deficit when Dallas Callahan scored on an error then tied it when GC Jarman and Rowan Watt scored on Kennedy Jones' double down the right field line.
Before entering the 10th, Mercer threatened in the top of the 9th when both Collin Price and William Mapes were in scoring position but were left stranded.
In the Mercer half of the 10th, Austin led off with a free pass to first but quickly moved 180 feet to third from a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Blake Schmitt and a Brown groundout. Austin advanced home on a wild pitch during a Hughes at-bat for the game-winning run.
Jackson Kelley (4-0) tallied his fourth win after 3.1 innings of shutout baseball - where he fanned six, walked one and yielded four hits in 15 faced. Alex Hoppe (4-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering just a hit, two walks but struck out three in 3.0 frames.
Ryan Lobus - the Mercer starter - threw 6.2 innings, fanned four, allowed six hits and yielded all of UNCG's four runs with half being earned.
Mercer - winners of their first two league series - will go for the sweep of the Spartans tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
