Mercer is second-highest ranked SoCon team in rankings
MACON, Ga. – CBS Sports released its FCS power rankings this week and coming in at No. 20 was the Mercer Bears.
Â
CBS Sports' Emory Hunt believes Devron Harper is in for a big year. "Keep an eye on WR Devron Harper, who dazzled in his debut season after coming over from Gardner-Webb," Hunt said. "He'll push for All-America honors when it's all said and done."
Â
This is the sixth different preseason ranking the Bears have received. The other five include: No. 23 by STATS Perform, No. 18 by FCS Nation Radio, No. 16 by the CFB Network, No. 17 by Athlon Sports and No. 18 by The Blue Bloods. Prior to this season, Mercer had never received recognition in preseason rankings.
Â
Also, several Mercer players have received national and SoCon recognition on preseason teams. The Bears were picked to finish second by the media and third by the coaches in the SoCon, highest the Bears have ever been picked in preseason selections.
Tomorrow, Aug. 13, Mercer fans have an opportunity to come meet and have pictures made with the Bears' coaches and players at the Mercer Athletics Fan Appreciation Day. Posters will be available for fans to have signed among members of the Mercer football, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball teams. Toby the Bear will be in attendance for photo opportunities and added features include Kona Ice on site and a bounce house for the younger fans. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Heritage Hall in the University Center.
The football team will hold a scrimmage open to the public that night at 6 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.
