Susie Gardner Gives Her Children's Book to Every Bibb County First Grader

Several community leaders partner in project with Mercer women's basketball coach
MACON, Ga. – Learning to read is an integral phase of early education for children. What better way to learn at a young age than to read a book written by a Division I head basketball coach.

Mercer women's basketball head coach Susie Gardner, wrote a book, "1, 2, 3 Team!," that was released in September 2016 and follows a young athlete as she learns that it takes more than one player to make a team. With support from United Way of Central Georgia, Macon orthopedic surgeon Bill Barnes, Macon philanthropist Beverly Knight Olson and Mercer University Press, Gardner is providing every Bibb County first-grader with a copy of the book for the start of the 2022-23 academic year.

To celebrate the beginning of the book distribution, coach Gardner handed out books and read the story Friday morning to students in Hartley Elementary School's media center.
