Midfielder Sparkled in Bears Opening Weekend
Macon, Ga.--Mercer Bears' midfielder Kendall Cook is the Southern Conference women's soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday Aug. 21.Â
The 5-foot-5 junior from Alpharetta had a big weekend with a goal and two assists, as the Bears went 1-0-1 in their opening week. Â
"Very proud of Kendall, and the work she's put in since the spring," head coach Tony Economopoulos said. "There's a lot more left in the tank."Â
Cook started the Bears' first scoring play of the season, with a corner kick late in the first half on Thursday against Campbell. She made a pass to Kylie Buchanan, who crossed the ball to the front of the goal where Lana Whitfield headed it in for a 1-1 tie, which is how the game ended.Â
She then led the Bears' attack with the game winning goal, and added an assist in Mercer's 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Sunday. Cook figured in three of the Bears' four goals in their first two games.Â
Cook also earned SoCon Player of the Week honors the week of Feb. 23 in the 2020-21 season. She was named Player of the Month that same month. Â
The Bears get back in action on Friday Aug. 26, hosting College of Charleston at 7 p.m. at Betts Stadium. Â
