Bears Finish 2-1 at Stetson Invitational

Mercer finished out the Stetson Invitational with a win against SIU-E and fell to Stetson
DeLand, Fla.- The Mercer Bears volleyball team went 2-1 at the Stetson Invitational with wins against Bethune-Cookman and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Bears fell against Stetson in the last game of the tournament.
Game Two: SIU-E
Set One | The Cougars took an early lead and continue to stay in front 20-13 at the second time out. The Bears would try to catch up, but SIU-E would take the set 25-20.
Set Two | The two teams would stay close with SIU-E pulling ahead 13-9 at the first time out. With big kills coming from Lillian Beardsley and Annie Karle, the Bears would continue to push ahead. The teams stayed within a one and two-point difference with Mercer pulling away to take the set, 26-24.
Set Three | Mercer would come out of the gates hot and take an 11-5 lead by the first timeout. The Bears continued to dominate and take the set 25-19.
Set Four | SIU-E stayed close to Mercer at the beginning of the set with Mercer having the lead 9-4 at the first time out. The Cougars would try to come back, but the Bears would pull away to take the set 25-22.
The Bears finished the match with a .324 attack PCT with double-digit kills from Karle (22) and Beardsley(10).
Game Three: Stetson
Set One | The two teams would stay neck and neck with major kills coming from Beardsley and Kiera McCarles. The Hatters would stay in the lead for most of the set and lead 21-18 by the third timeout. Stetson would take the lead and set 25-21.
Set Two | The second set stayed the same pace with the two going back and forth. Stetson would have the lead at the first time out 14-10. The Bears would not be able to catch up and the Hatters would take the set 25-15.
Set Three | Kills from Paige Wagers and Rachel Bell would help the Bears gain momentum early in the set. The Hatters would pull away and lead 10-7 by the first timeout. The Bears would continue to fight back with more kills coming from Karle. However, Stetson would be able to keep the lead and take the set 25-23.
UP NEXT
The Bears will next play at the Virginia Tournament on Friday, Sept.16, against the University of Maryland.
