Mercer Wins One at Home

The Bears finished the Mercer Bear Classic 1-2.
 Macon, Ga.- Mercer finished its Mercer Bear Classic Saturday going 1-2 in the tournament. Saturday's contests were against the Queen's University of Charlotte and Charleston Southern.
"It was a 1-2 home tournament record which we are disappointed in, but it was not all bad," Coach Derek Schroder said. "We have a lot of first-time starters this year and are working through our executions. We made a lot of progress this weekend toward the team we want to be."
Match One: vs Queens University of Charlotte
Set One | The Royals took an early 3-0 lead before the Bears gained momentum to take the lead 5-3. Big kills came from Lillian Beardsley and Jaida Howell for Mercer to build the lead to 11-9 at the first time out. Queens caught up and went on a 7-0 scoring run to take a 21-14 lead. The Bears could not catch up and Queens took the set 25-17.
Set Two | The two teams stayed neck and neck for the beginning of the game with Mercer holding the lead 15-11 at the first timeout. Mercer would continue the fight and take the set 25-23.
Set Three | The third set would bring an early 3-0 lead for the Bears with kills from Paige Wagers and Annie Karle. Mercer held the lead throughout to take the set 25-16.
Set Four | Mercer got the early jump on Queens and led 15-11 at the first time out. The Bears continued to push with two kills by Annie Karle and an Ace by Kiera McCarles to take the set 25-21.
Match Two: vs Charleston Southern
Set One | The Buccaneers and Bears went neck and neck with early kills from Mercercer's Morgan Verheyen and Jaida Howell. The first time out had a 13-8 Bears lead. Charleston chipped away at the lead, sliding past Mercer, to take the set 25-23.Â
Set Two | The two teams stayed close throughout the set Charleston held the lead 15-13 at the first timeout. Neither team was able to pull away with a long stretch of points. Mercer continued the fight but lost the set 25-23.
Set Three | The third set saw Mercer in an early 3-0 hole. The Bears retaliated with kills from Lillian Beardsley and Annie Karle. Eventually, The Buccaneers won the set 25-21.Â
Mercer also announced the All-Tournament Team for the Mercer Bear Classic:

The Bears will resume play at the Stetson Invitational in Deland, Fl. The first match is set against Bethune-Cookman University on Sept. 9 at 3 p.m.Â
