GREENVILLE, S.C. – It was déjà vu all over again for senior Devron Harper on Monday afternoon when another breakout Saturday performance led to him being crowned as the Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Â
Harper, a product of Conyers and Heritage High School, racked up 217 all-purpose yards, including 60 receiving yards (5 catches), as the Mercer football team clobbered visiting VMI, 38-3, on Saturday afternoon at Five Star Stadium. In addition to his numbers through the air, Harper tallied 57 kickoff return yards (2 attempts) and 100 punt return yards (5 attempts), including a 73-yard punt return touchdown early in the third period. He also had a 33-yard scoring reception - his first touchdown catch of the season - midway through the second quarter.
Â
It is the fourth career weekly league special teams accolade for Harper who moved atop the program's list for career all-purpose yards with Saturday's performance as well. In just 2-1/2 seasons with the Orange & Black, he has racked up 2,599 all-purpose yards, including 1,647 receiving yards on 124 career receptions.
Â
Harper currently paces all NCAA FCS student-athletes in combined kick return yards (504) and punt return touchdowns (2). He is listed third, nationally, with a SoCon-best 169.8 all-purpose yards per game.
Â
The Bears (3-2, 1-1 SoCon) will pack up their show and head to Johnson City, Tenn., on Saturday to take on league rival East Tennessee State (1-3, 0-1) inside William B. Greene Jr. Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
