MACON – Student-athletes representing three different sports, as well as an ardent supporter of the Orange & Black, were officially inducted into the Mercer University Athletics Hall of Fame as part of Homecoming Week last week.
Â
Former men's soccer player Ian Cameron joined men's basketball standout Wesley Duke and baseball phenom Cory Gearrin in comprising the latest list of Hall of Fame student-athletes. They were joined on the distinguished list by former Mercer Board of Trustees member Tony Moye who, along with his wife, Nancy, has contributed benevolently to the progress of MU's athletics department.
Â
Cameron amassed 50 points on 17 goals and 16 assists as a member of Mercer's men's soccer team from 2006-09, and graduated from the Stetson-Hatcher School of Business in 2010. A 2-time All-Atlantic Sun selection, he picked up all-region, all-conference and all-conference tournament recognition as a senior, and finished his collegiate career ranking among the program's top-10 leaders in points, goals and assists.
Â
Cameron assumed the reigns as head coach and technical director of South Georgia Tormenta FC in time for the 2020 campaign. Prior to his move to Statesboro, he served stints as both an assistant coach at Mercer, as well as the head coach at Eckerd for three seasons.
Â
Duke averaged 9.8 points and 5.9 rebounds in 116 career games (102 starts) for the Bears from 2000-04, while also totaling 173 blocks and 104 steals as well. He finished fourth in the College Slam Dunk Contest held in conjunction with the 2005 NCAA Final Four in St. Louis, Mo., and, following a standout collegiate career on the hardwood, inked a free agent deal with the National Football League's Denver Broncos for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
Â
Duke ranks 24th on Mercer's all-time scoring list with 1,141 career points in the Orange & Black, while also ranking second on the program's all-time blocks (173) list and 10th among MU's all-time leading rebounders (687).
Â
Gearrin played a key role as a member of the Mercer bullpen and graduated from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 2007. A fourth-round selection of the Atlanta Braves in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, he compiled a 20-19 record and a 2.88 ERA in 363.0 innings pitched at the professional level, and saw action with seven MLB organizations, including a 4-year stint with the San Francisco Giants.
Â
Gearrin proved to be lights out to Southern Conference hitters as a senior in 2007, registering a 4-3 record, a miniscule 2.44 earned run average and 13 saves. He struck out 65 batters and allowed just 15 hits in 44-1/3 innings pitched in pacing the Orange & Black to a 33-25 record.
Â
Recognized as one of Mercer's most loyal and generous supporters, Moye has served multiple terms on Mercer's Board of Trustees, including a stint as chairman of the board, and is a past president of The President's Club, as well as a life member of both The President's Club and the Mercer Athletic Foundation. The Moyes made a generous gift to name the University's Football and Lacrosse Complex in 2012, and also established the "Coaches Continuity Fund" to help recruit and retain top-level coaches for the department's 18 varsity athletic teams as well.
Â
Moye graduated from Mercer's Southern School of Pharmacy in 1973 and founded Moye's Pharmacy in 1977. An active community leader in McDonough, he has served on numerous boards of local organizations, and is a member of the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy. He received that organization's Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service in 2012.
