
Mercer Drops 66-53 Contest At Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Mercer women's basketball team dropped a 66-53 contest to Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina.
Charleston Southern outscored the Bears 20-5 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Bears. Charleston Southern shot 25-for-53 (47.2%) from the field to Mercer's 21-for-62 (33.9%) shooting on the afternoon.
Briana Peguero led Mercer in scoring with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Mackenzie Johnson was the other Bear to score in double figures as she had 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer got out to a fast start, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead after Peguero fastbreak layup. Charleston Southern would get within four at 11-7, but Mercer would lead it 20-12 after the first quarter.
After a jump shot from Mackenzie Johnson made it 30-24 Mercer with just under five minutes to play, the Buccaneers would chip away at Mercer's lead over the final five minutes of the quarter, outscoring the Bears 10-4 over that time to tie the game at 34 at halftime.
Neither team could gain separation on the scoreboard in the third quarter, although Charleston Southern would take a five-point lead at 43-38, but that was the largest lead for either team in the third quarter. The Bears closed the quarter strong, going on a 10-3 run to take a two-point lead going into the fourth quarter at 48-46.
The Bears couldn't close out the game in the fourth quarter, only managing five points on 2-for-13 (15.4%) in the final quarter. Despite that, the Bears found themselves down just four at 56-52 after a Peguero jump shot with 1:38 to play. Charleston Southern was able to hold off the Bears over the final 90 seconds to earn the win.

Mercer will play at Charlotte on Wednesday, November 29 at 5:30 p.m.

- Peguero has scored in double figures in six of eight games this season
- Mercer lost for the first time this season when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent. The Bears had 13 turnovers to the Charleston Southern's 15
- Stacie Jones scored all eight of her points on 3-for-3 shooting in the first quarter. She attempted just two shots for the remainder of the game
- Mercer was a perfect 9-for-10 from the free throw line. The Bears are 20-for-21 from the stripe over their last two games
