GREENVILLE, S.C. – As a testament to his work inside the classroom, as well as his efforts in the 17th-ranked Mercer football team's 17-7 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday in the opening round of the FCS Playoffs, linebacker Ken Standley was crowned as the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, the league office announced.
Â
A junior from Waycross and a product of Ware County High School, Standley matched a team-high with nine tackles in a dominant defensive effort against the Runnin' Bulldogs at Five Star Stadium, while also turning in a pair of tackles for loss as well. The 3-year starter for the Bears logged a trio of tackles on 3rd-down situations for Gardner-Webb that inevitably forced a punt by the visitors.
Â
Standley's work has been just as noteworthy in the classroom where he currently maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average while pursuing his master's degree in business administration. He earned his bachelor's degree in public health from Mercer prior to preseason drills in August.
Â
The Bears (9-3) will continue their road in the NCAA postseason on Saturday when they make the 1,300-mile trip to Brookings, S.D., to lock horns with top-ranked and defending national champion South Dakota State (11-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET inside SDSU's 19,300-seat Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium and will be broadcasted live by ESPN+.
