Wise Earns SoCon Defensive Player Of The Month Laurels

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Torrid defensive efforts throughout the month of October paid dividends for Lance Wise Jr. on Tuesday when the junior safety was celebrated as the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Month, the league office announced.

Wise, a product of Marietta, Ga., and Hillgrove High School, spearheaded a staunch defensive effort for the Orange & Black last month that led to a trio of victories, including an upset win at then-No. 10 Western Carolina on October 28. Wise amassed a team-best 33 tackles (15 solo) across four games in the calendar's 10th month, including 2-1/2 tackles for loss. The three-year captain also made a pair of contributions to the scoreboard by returning a pair of interceptions for touchdown, as well as broke up two passes.

A four-year starter in the secondary for the Bears, Wise currently ranks second on the program's all-time tackles list with 298 career stops, including 144 of the solo variety. He became Mercer's all-time interceptions leader earlier this season in the home win over VMI, but has since added two more pickoffs to his career total.

The 23rd-ranked Bears (7-3, 5-2 SoCon) will be back in action again on Saturday when they culminate Homecoming Week on campus by battling SoCon nemesis Samford (5-4, 4-3) at Five Star Stadium.
