Mercer held off late surge by Rams

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball program (5-1) earned its fourth-straight win in a 9-7 victory over Rhode Island (1-3) on Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.

The Bears started quickly with a two-run blast by Eric Toth for his second home run of the year in the bottom of the first. Toth batted .500 (2-for-4) with three RBI and now leads the team with seven runs plated this season. Rhode Island answered in the top of the second with a two-run home run by Michael Anderson.

While Treyson Hughes was batting in the bottom of the second, Toth started to steal second which allowed Jozsef Rohrbacher to steal home while Rhode Island was focused on Toth, who eventually took second.

Trevor Austin brought home his second runner of the day in the fifth followed by a two-RBI double by Eli Runyan. The sophomore plated Hughes in the seventh for his fifth RBI in the past two games.

The Rams attempted a ninth-inning comeback with two home runs scoring three, but it was not enough as Jaxon O'Neal struck out Anthony DePino for the final out.

Josh Harlow (2-0) started on the mound for the Bears and pitched six innings to earn his second win of the season. The right-hander recorded six strikeouts, six hits, two runs, and two walks. O'Neal threw the final three innings with six strikeouts, five hits, five runs, and two walks.
