Mercer’s late rally fell short

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball program (5-2) fell, 7-4, in the second game of the series against Rhode Island (2-3). The two teams will play the rubber match on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Ryan Lobus started on the mound for the Bears, striking out seven batters and letting up two runs in the first four innings until Micah Takac took over in the top of the fifth. Takac pitched for two innings, giving up two hits and two runs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Reid Brown had an RBI single to left field, bringing Jozsef Rohrabacher across the plate. Trouble came in the top of fourth inning when bases were loaded and Lobus walked a batter home and later in the inning let up an RBI single to right, giving the Rams the upper hand on the scoreboard.

After taking over for Lobus, Takac gave up a homerun in the top of the seventh bringing the score to 3-1 in favor of the Rams before Colton Cosper came to the mound to face five batters, letting up four hits and three runs. Alex McKay came in for the last out of the seventh inning. McKay went for two innings, letting up no hits and no runs for the Bears.

Mercer was closing in on the Rams in the seventh and eighth innings with sacrifice flyouts that turned into runs. Ty Dalley scored off a sacrifice fly out to center by Rohrabacher. Ben Olson scored Treyson Hughes in the bottom of the eighth and Dalley brought Landon Underhill across the plate later that inning.

The rally was not enough to carry the Bears to a victory as the ninth inning went scoreless for both sides.
