Bears Fall at Stetson Tournament

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears Beach Volleyball team went 0-4 at the Stetson Tournament this past Friday and Saturday at the Cooper Beach Volleyball courts in DeLand, Florida.
FRIDAY, FEB. 24
STETSON | 10:00 AM
The Mercer Bears fell to Stetson 0-5 in their first matches of the tournament.
Lexi Polychrones and Jordan Paddock were defeated by Stetson's Henson and Zolnercikova in both sets by a score of 11-21. Nicole O'Mara and Kate Hardie were defeated by Ferraris and Namike in their first set 17-21 and were defeated in their second set by a score of 14-21. Sydney Benson and Jordyn Thomas-Warren were defeated in both sets by Bramante and Gauthier. Benson and Thomas-Warren battled but lost the first set 10-21 and the second set 17-21. Alyssa Scoggins and Hollis Engel battled hard against Stadnik and Sirois and dropped their first set 15-21 and their second set 12-21. Kathryn Corbett and Jordan Morris dropped their first set 10-21 and their second 15-21 to Stetson's Weintraub and Sirois. Mary Callahan and Skylar Kelley battled against Clement and Della. Callahan and Kelley lost their first set 9-21 and their second 16-21.
NORTH FLORIDA | 4:00 PM
The Mercer Bears fell to North Florida, 1-4 in The Bears second matches of the Stetson tournament.
Lexi Polychrones and Jordan Paddock were defeated by North Florida's Iris and Brooks in the first set by 19-21 and lost their second 18-21. Nicole O'Mara and Kate Hardie battled against Camp and Michaela and lost their first set 16-21 and lost their second set 18-21. Sydney Benson and Jordyn Thomas-Warren matched up against McMilan and Guenter and won the Bears its first match of the tournament. Benson and Thomas-Warren battled and won their first set 21-17 but fell in their second set 10-21. Benson and Thomas-Warren continued to fight and defeated McMilan and Guenter in the final set 15-11, winning the match. Alyssa Scoggins and Hollis Engel battled hard against Murray and Espy and dropped their first set 19-21 and lost their second set 12-21. Jordan Morris and Carly Lenhardt dropped their first set 8-21 and their second 15-21 to North Florida's Murphy and Benanti. Emily Earwood and Kathryn Corbett matched up against McMillan and Guenter. Earwood and Corbett lost their first set 10-21 and lost their second 15-21.
SATURDAY, FEB. 25
FLORIDA ATLANTIC | 8:00 AM
The Mercer Bears fell to Florida Atlantic, 0-5 in the Bears third matches of the tournament.
Polychrones and Paddock dropped their match to Florida Atlantic's Adams and Honzovicova. Polychrones and Paddock lost their first set 7-21 and lost their second set 10-21. O'Mara and Hardie faced off with Austin and Jarman and lost both sets. The first set score was 15-21 and the second set was 11-21. Benson and Thomas-Warren struggled to come back against Florida Atlantic's Robertson and Cangelosi, dropping their first set 9-21 and dropping their second 15-21. Scoggins and Polychrones would lose a tough match to Florida Atlantic's McLaughlin and Moon. Scoggins and Polychrones would lose the first set 21-11, but they would win a nail-biting second set 26-24. Sadly, they would go on to lose the final set 15-10. Morris and Lenhardt would also go into a third set against Florida Atlantic's Orvieto and Young. After losing the first 21-11, Morris and Lenhardt would win the second 21-19 and would lose the third 15-6. Callahan and Corbett would lose both sets to K. Mignerey and L. Mignerey. The scores for both games were 21-16.
FLORIDA GULF COAST | 2:00 PM
The Mercer Bears fell to North Florida, 0-5 in their second matches of the tournament.
Polychrones and Paddock dropped their match to Florida Gulf Coast's Johnson and Paramelly. Polychrones and Paddock lost their first set 6-21 and lost their second set 6-21. O'Mara and Hardie faced off against Beismer and Rosales and lost both sets. The first set score was 19-21 and the second set was 7-21. Benson and Thomas-Warren lost both sets to Florida Gulf Coast's Felts and Brewer, dropping their first set 12-21 and dropping their second 11-21. Scoggins and Thomas-Warren would lose their match to Florida Gulf Coast's Hamilton and Luebbers. Scoggins and Thomas-warren would lose a close first set 16-21 and would lose the second set 11-21. Morris and Corbet would battle against Florida Gulf Coast's Carpenter and Gluc. They would go on to lose a tight first set 14-21 and would lose the second 11-21. Lenhardt and Kelley would lose two tough sets to Florida Gulf Coast's Felts and Thompson. The final score for the first set was 18-21 and the final score for the second was 19-21.
"I was very pleased with the way the team competed opening weekend," said head coach Marsh. "We were able to manifest many of the things that we have been working on in practice in competition. That was a huge validation of our system which will pay dividends moving forward, the team and I are fired up for UNF next weekend!"
