Mercer outscored Western Carolina 28-14 in the second quarter and led wire-to-wire in a 68-44 win over Western Carolina on Thursday night.
Mercer held Western Carolina to just four points in the opening quarter as the Catamounts shot just 33 percent from the field for the game.
Mercer was 11-for-14 from the field in the second quarter including 4-for-4 from 3-point range, all made my Amoria Neal-Tysor who returned from a three-game absence due to injury.
In her return, in 17 minutes of playing time, Neal-Tysor finished with 14 points on 5-of-8 (62.5%) shooting.
Enjulina Gonzalez led all scorers with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She didn't miss a shot in the first half, going 6-for-6 from the floor and had 13 of her 19 points in the first half.
Erin Houpt was the other Bear to score in double-figures as she finished with 13 points on 3-of-7 shooting and tied her career-high with three steals.
SCOUTING UNCG
UNCG is coming off a 9-19 season in 2021-22. The Spartans went 5-9 in conference play. The Spartans were picked to finish seventh in the eight team league in the preseason coaches poll.
UNCG is fifth in the conference play in points per game at 62.5 per game. They are last in conference play in scoring defense as opponents are scoring 65.4 per game against the Spartans.
The Spartans are averaging 13.4 offensive rebounds in conference play, third best in the SoCon. UNCG has not been effective from 3-point range this season as they are last in the conference at 27.8 percent from deep.
Forward Isys Grady was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team. Grady missed the first month of the season. In her 13 games played, Grady is
averaging 6.8 points per game and is shooting 29.9Â percent from the field.
UNCG's leading scorers are Akira Wiggins and Faith Price. Wiggins is averaging 11.2 points per game and Price is averaging 11.0 per game. However, they each are shooting under 40 percent from the field. Forward Khalis Cain leads the SoCon in rebounds per game (9.5 rpg).
