Bears Host First Midweek Game Against Georgia State

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball program (12-5) will welcome Georgia State (9-7) for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, March 14 at 6 p.m. This is the first home midweek game of the season and the start of the Tidy Tuesday promotions. All tickets are $2 and the first 200 fans will receive free paint brushes to Paint the Panthers.

Mercer leads the all-time series with Georgia State, 73-52. The Bears won the last seven meetings, including both matchups last season by a combined 16 runs. Tuesday's game is the first of two games against Georgia State this season; Mercer will face the Panthers in Atlanta on Wednesday, April 19.

SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers opened the season with a thundering 12-2 win over Cincinnati but lost the series. GSU posted a four-game sweep of Brown and won a series against Presbyterian. Most recently, Georgia State was swept by Clemson. The Panthers have played just two midweek games and won both against Alabama State and Kennesaw State.

Georgia State has gone yard 34 times this year, and five players have hit at least four home runs led by JoJo Jackson and Luke Boynton with five each. Max Ryerson has been challenging pitchers with his .423 batting average. Cameron Jones is a player to watch around the bases as the junior is 14-of-17 on stolen base attempts this season. He ranks fifth in Division I for stolen bases this year.

Jones also started one of the Panthers' midweek games on the mound. He pitched two scoreless innings against Kennesaw State, striking out three and allowing two hits and two walks. Rafael Acosta started the other midweek game against Alabama State with four strikeouts, two hits, and three walks in four scoreless innings.

The Bears return home after a sweep of Baylor, the first against an active Big 12 program in school history. Josh Farmer was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for throwing seven scoreless innings against Baylor on Sunday. Ryan Lobus struck out eight batters on Saturday, just one shy of his career best set against Bellarmine last weekend. Josh Harlow earned his fourth win of the season on the bump to keep the Bears undefeated on Fridays.

The weekend started as a home run fest with Eric Toth logging the first multi-home run game of his career. Ty Dalley also went yard on Friday to tie Toth for the team lead with five home runs this season. Carter Geier hit his first home run of the season on Saturday, and Treyson Hughes hit his fifth of the year to join Toth and Dalley at the top.
