Bears Suffer Late Comeback by UNCG

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball program (27-17, 9-5) faced an 18-13 setback against UNCG (19-14, 6-8) on Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park. The Spartans scored 11 runs in the top of the eighth to overcome a strong offensive showing from the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG got off to a hot start immediately, scoring three in the top of the first off of base hits. The Bears cut into the deficit with an RBI single from Carter Sanford to plate Treyson Hughes. In the top of the second, Hughes made an impressive diving catch in center field to help keep a scoreless defensive frame. UNCG added to its total in the third with a solo home run by Kennedy Jones.
A string of singles earned two runs for Mercer in the third. Antonio Brown notched the first single of the inning followed by another by Eric Toth. A. Brown was brought home on a single by Sanford, logging his second RBI of the day. Bradley Frye plated the next run with an RBI single scoring Toth.
The teams posted mirrored performances in the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth inning featured a single, a stolen base, and a strikeout for each team. In the fifth, both teams saw the first batter strike out, followed by a ground out to second base, and concluded with a foul ball caught by the first baseman.
Mercer scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead by one. Ty Dalley added to his team-leading RBI total with a ground out to plate Frye, tying the score line at 4-4. A. Brown fired the Bears into the lead, 5-4, with an RBI single, scoring Conner Todaro who pinch ran for Jackson Cherry. The Spartans tied the game and retook the lead on a single and a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh.
The flood gates opened in the bottom of the seventh as Mercer posted an eight-run inning. With the bases loaded on a walk, a hit by pitch, and an intentional walk of Dalley, Max Kops entered to pinch hit and scored Rohrbacher on a sacrifice fly. Three consecutive RBI singles by Carter Geier, Hughes, and A. Brown plated three more runs followed by Hughes running home on a wild pitch. Back up to bat, Rohrbacher blasted a three-run shot to right field to cap off the scoring. Mercer had 14 plate appearances in the inning, and seven of the runs were scored with two outs on the board.
UNCG responded immediately with an 11-run inning to take the lead, 17-13. Hughes and Toth each recorded singles in the bottom of the eighth, but the Bears stranded two without pushing any runs across the plate. The Spartans added one final run in the top of the ninth and retired the side in the bottom to secure the win, 18-13.
