Mercer Hands Wofford First SoCon Sweep Since 2016

Bears’ first sweep of Wofford since 1997
HOW IT HAPPENED
Three players reached in the first for Mercer with back-to-back singles by Antonio Brown and Jozsef Rohrbacher followed up by Eric Toth reaching on a fielder's choice, but the Bears could not plate any runs. Fred Wilson notched a strikeout in each of the first two innings, and the Bears caught David Wiley stealing to close out the second frame.

Mercer opened the scoring in the third with a single by A. Brown, plating Treyson Hughes who reached on a double. A. Brown was called out at second on the play for the second out of the inning.

Wofford took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run shot to left field by Trey Yunger, scoring Ryan Galanie who reached on an error. The Bears got out of the inning catching a runner stealing, yet again.
The Terriers' lead did not last long as Toth led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, tying the score at 2-2. This was Toth's 14th of the season and Mercer's 10th of the series.

Wofford retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Cameron Gill made his way around the base path on a double, a double play by the Bears, and a single by Jack Renwick. Wilson's fourth strikeout ended the inning.
Bradley Frye opened the fifth by reaching on an error, advancing to second on a wild pitch, moving to third on a fly out by Ty Dalley, and running home on a fly out by Hughes to tie the score line at three apiece. Garrett Sloan entered on the bump and posted a scoreless frame, dealing three consecutive strikes to catch the final batter of the inning looking.

Mercer doubled its run total in the sixth with a three-run inning. Rohrbacher opened the frame with a perfectly-placed bunt down the third base line. A fielder's choice got him out at second as Toth reached first. Carter Sanford hit a double off the outfield wall, scoring a hustling Toth from first to take the lead, 4-3.

Sanford advanced to third on a wild pitch but was out on a fielder's choice, allowing Austin to stand on first. Jackson Cherry stepped up to the plate and hit his third home run of the weekend to score two more for the Bears. Sloan logged another great inning, retiring the side with a strikeout to end the frame.

Hughes recorded his seventh hit of the weekend with a single in the top of the seventh, but Mercer did not see any others reach base. Wofford added one on a sacrifice fly, but Jaxon O'Neal entered in relief for the final out of the inning, holding a 6-4 lead.
The scoring continued in the eighth with an RBI single by Frye. Toth reached on a hit by pitch and Cherry earned his second intentional walk of the weekend to place pinch runner Conner Todaro on first. Frye lined a single over the shortstop's head to score Toth.

Toth added his second RBI of the game in the top of the ninth, scoring Hughes who went 3-for-4 on the day. O'Neal struck out the side in bottom of the ninth to cap off the game.

NOTES
- This was the first sweep by either team in the series while both programs are members of the Southern Conference. It was Wofford's first time being swept in the SoCon since 2016.
- This was Mercer's first three-game sweep of Wofford since 1997.
- Mercer caught Wofford stealing three times this weekend and did not allow any stolen bases. Entering the series, Wofford ranked fourth in the nation in stolen bases with 137.
- Mercer hit 11 home runs during the series. Six different players recorded a home run, and three players posted multi-home run games this weekend: Jackson Cherry (5/12), Antonio Brown (5/13), Jozsef Rohrbacher (5/13).
- Eric Toth hit his 14th home run of the season.
- Cherry hit his 11th home run of the season. He hit three home runs in the series.
- Hughes is on a 13-game hitting streak and has reached base in 16-straight games.
- Rohrbacher has reached base in 13-straight games.
