
Volleyball Falls At Alabama In Weekend Finale

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Home-standing Alabama registered a.350 hitting percentage and utilized nine service aces and five blocks to hand the visiting Mercer volleyball team a 3-0 setback on Saturday in the finale of the Crimson Tide Invitational.

It was the second loss of the weekend for the Bears (1-2) who hit a respectable .249 at the net on the weekend, while also posting 11.1 kills per set. Alabama (3-0) won nine-straight sets to sweep through the weekend, including straight-set victories over Mississippi Valley State and Saint Louis on Friday.

The Orange & Black will continue its season-opening 9-match stretch away from Macon next weekend when it treks to Tampa, Fla., for the South Florida-hosted Bulls Volleyball Invitational. The Bears are slated to take on Florida Gulf Coast, Idaho State and USF at the two-day event.

SET 1 I 18-25 | A back-and-forth affair early on, Alabama tacked up six-straight points to forge an 11-5 advantage, and then held the Bears at arm's length the rest of the way out. The Bears pulled to within 22-17 on a Kylee Quigley kill, but the Crimson Tide scored three of the last four points to ice the set. |
SET 2 I 16-25 | The Crimson Tide registered a .516 hitting percentage in the second set to aid a 25-16 triumph that put it up by two sets. The sides traded punches for a majority of the first 19 points of action, before Alabama utilized a 5-2 run to put some distance between itself and the visitors. |
SET 3 I 21-25 | Mercer used a bad set by the hosts to knot the final set up at 10 apiece midway through, but Alabama keyed another win with five-straight points to go up 15-10. Mercer tacked up two consecutive points to pull to within two, 23-21, but the hosts closed out the weekend with a kill from Micah Gryniewicz and a hitting error by the Bears. |
