Harper Picks Up SoCon Special Teams Player Of The Week Laurel

GREENVILLE, S.C. – A near record-breaking performance in Saturday evening's win over visiting Morehead State landed senior Devron Harper on familiar ground on Monday when the all-purpose threat was crowned as Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

Harper, a native of Conyers, Ga., racked up 337 all-purpose yards against the Eagles, including a lion's share through the air, as the 20^th-ranked Mercer football team rolled past MSU, 48-22. Harper hauled in six catches for 100 yards – the fifth 100-yard receiving game of his career – while also amassing 72 rushing yards (3 carries), 76 punt return yards (2 attempts) and 74 kickoff return yards (4 attempts).

He also logged a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. His 337 all-purpose yards on Saturday evening fell just 27 yards shy of matching a record (364) established by fellow preseason all-American Ty James at Samford in last year's season finale.

Monday's announcement marked the second career conference weekly honor for Harper, who was also decorated with the special teams award last season following a record-setting performance at VMI.

The Bears (2-1) are in the midst of a bye week, and will resume their 2023 regular season schedule on September 23 when they trek to Greenville, S.C., to take on 7^th-ranked and preseason SoCon favorite Furman (1-1) at Paladin Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
