Eight Sports Programs Will Be Impacted With New Facilities
MACON - Mercer University and The Mercer Athletic Foundation announced today three major facility projects that will upgrade student-athlete and fan experiences in eight Mercer Bears programs.
Â
The three athletics projects include a new state-of-the-art baseball performance center, a new home for Mercer men's and women's tennis and golf and an end zone addition on the north end of Anderson Field within Five Star Stadium. Together, the projects represent a multi-million-dollar investment in athletics facilities.
Â
"I firmly believe each of these projects will elevate our programs. They position us to win recruiting battles and compete for championships," said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. "The generosity of our donor base never ceases to amaze me."
Â
"These projects show the impact our donor base has on the big picture of Mercer athletics," said Brian Gerrity, deputy athletic director and executive director of the Mercer Athletic Foundation. "These projects will help us win, help us recruit and improve our gameday atmosphere. I want to publicly thank our lead donors to each of these projects."
Â
Baseball Performance Center
The Cantrell Family Baseball Performance Center is a 9,200-square-foot, two-story facility that will include batting cages, a pitching lab, team meeting space, a recruiting lounge, spectator balcony, coaches offices and a coaches locker room. Positioned on the third base side of Claude Smith Field at OrthoGeorgia Park, the Cantrell Baseball Performance Center will be on par with the top baseball facilities in the country. Charlie and Tammy Cantrell provided the lead commitment for this facility, along with a major gift from the Claude Smith Family Legacy Endowment.
Â
Tennis/Golf Facility
Janet Overstreet, the W.L. Amos, Sr. Foundation and Kevin and Carolyn Scheck have generously provided the lead commitments for a 5,800-square-foot facility that will be home to both Mercer women's and men's tennis and golf programs. The tennis complex will be dedicated as the Copelan Tennis Complex, the tennis facility will be named the Overstreet Tennis Center, while the golf facility will be known as the Kevin and Carolyn Scheck Golf Performance Center. This facility will include locker rooms for the tennis program, a tennis lounge, office space for the tennis and golf coaches, a golf lounge and repair room as well as a putting lab and multiple hitting bays for golf. This new facility will transform the College Street entrance to campus.
Â
Football/Lacrosse End Zone Facility
Mercer Trustee William H. (Billy) Anderson II, Les Cole and Southern Trust Insurance have committed to funding a dynamic end zone project at the north end of Anderson Field within Five Star Stadium. This addition will transform the grass berm underneath the stadium's videoboard into a multi-tier tailgate area. On the field, tailgate tents will be available on gameday, allowing fans a unique in-game experience. The top tier of the facility will feature common space to encourage mingling on gameday with seating and concession areas. This project will enhance an already robust gameday environment and fans will feel they are "part of the action" on the field. Football, women's lacrosse and men's lacrosse fans will benefit from this addition.
