MACON – Upsets dominated the day on Thursday at the Mercer Tennis Classic as half of the seeded players were ousted in the main draw of the singles tournament, while the doubles draw went according to plan at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in north Macon.

Third-seeded Maria Lourdes Carle and fourth-seeded Maya Joint were both ousted in straight sets, as were seventh-seeded Astra Sharma and eighth-seeded Anastasia Tikhonova. Top-seeded Renata Zarazua yielded just one game in her 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Liv Hovde, while second-seeded Anna Blinkova was equally as dominant in her 6-0, 6-2 win over Martina Okalova.

All four seeded doubles teams advanced on Thursday, but fourth-seeded Whitney Osuigwe and Alana Smith had to work overtime for their victory over Alicia Herrero Linana and Melany Solange Krywoj. Herrero Linana/Solange Krywoj took the opening set by a 6-3 score, before Herrero Linana/Solange stormed back with a 6-3 victory in the second set. The matchup was ultimately decided with a 15-13 tiebreaker.

Singles quarterfinal action will consume the day on Friday beginning at 11 a.m., including Zarazua's tilt with fifth-seeded Ann Li. The only doubles matchup of the day is set to get going at approximately 2 p.m. when top-seeded Ingrid Gamarra Martins/Quinn Gleason takes on third-seeded Tikhonova/Zarazua.
