CARY, N.C. – Former Mercer baseball standout Colby Thomas has been selected to Team USA's roster for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12 Tournament, USA Baseball announced today. The tournament, which features the world's 12 top-ranked teams, begins on November 9. Team USA will open play in Guadalajara and Tepic, Mexico from November 9-14 and try to advance to the final round of competition in Tokyo, Japan from November 21-24.Â
Â
Team USA's roster consists of 15 pitchers and 13 position players who are not currently on Major League Baseball 40-man rosters. Thomas is the lone representative from the Oakland Athletics organization. Team USA is managed by World Series champion and longtime Los Angels Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Â
Â
Thomas is coming off of a huge season in which he was named the A's minor league player of the year by Baseball America. Spending the season between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas, Thomas slugged 31 home runs and was one of only six minor leaguers to hit 30 or more big flies. For the year, he posted a slash line of .277/.342/.563, and his 44 doubles were one shy of the minor league lead. A third-round pick in 2022, Thomas is currently ranked as the number seven prospect in the A's organization by MLB Pipeline.
Â
Thomas was an All-Southern Conference performer for the Bears from 2020-23, playing in 117 games (115 starts) and compiling a career batting average of .291 with 72 extra-base hits, 105 RBI and 113 runs scored. His finest season in the Orange & Black came in 2022, hitting .325 with 17 homers and 14 doubles to earn All-SoCon First Team honors from the league's coaches and Second Team honors from the media. He was also named to the league's All-Freshman Team in 2021 after posting 23 extra-base hits.Â
