MERCER/MISSISSIPPI STATE SERIES
Mississippi State leads the all-time series, 3-2, but Wednesday evening's matchup will mark the first meeting between the squads since the Bulldogs captured a 97-66 home win on Nov. 14, 2014. Mercer captured matchups with the Bulldogs to highlight both the 1976-77 and 1977-78 campaigns, but the Bulldogs have captured each of the last three meetings, including an 89-51 triumph in the last meeting in Starkville (Nov. 18. 2007).
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS | |
The Bulldogs (4-0) have captured each of the first four legs of their season-opening 5-game home stand, and will ride a seven-game home win streak into Wednesday's meeting with the Orange & Black. Junior guard Debreasha Powe is the lone returning starter off of last season's 23-12 squad that captured a pair of games in the Women's National Invitation Tournament. Sophomore forward Quanirah Montague returns for the Maroon & White as well.
MERCER/MISSISSIPPI STATE TIES
Humphrey Coliseum is a familiar setting for two of Mercer's coaches. Head coach Michelle Clark-Heard was the Assistant AD of Women's Basketball at Mississippi State under Head Coach Sam Purcell last season. Assistant coach Blessing (Chekwa) Freeman starred on the court for the Bulldogs from 2002-06.
LAST TIME OUT | |
Home-standing Mercer used 60 percent field goal shooting, as well as a 10-for-11 clip from the free throw line, to fuel a 13-point disparity in the final quarter that rallied the Bears past North Carolina A&T, 46-38, on Sunday afternoon in Hawkins Arena. Junior Aliyah Collins scored nine of her team-best 13 points in the fourth quarter, and finished Saturday's outing with three assists and a pair of steals as well. Collins connected on all five of her free throw attempts in the fourth period as well.
ON DECK | |
The Bears will return home briefly on Friday to take on Charleston Southern (1-4) in Hawkins Arena. Start time has been slated for 7 p.m., and tickets can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
