Bears Welcome Georgia Tech To Hawkins Arena On Sunday

MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team will put the cap on a short two-game home stand on Sunday afternoon when the Bears suit up to battle unbeaten Georgia Tech at Hawkins Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Fans unable to make the trip to Middle Georgia can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the B-C athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcasted live on ESPN+.

ABOUT THE BEARS
The Bears (4-6) are fresh from a heartbreaking loss to visiting Charlotte on Thursday. Mercer put together a 10-0 run to take a 42-41 lead with just less than two minutes left, but the 49ers used a layup with 36 seconds left to prevail by a lone point. Senior Ashlee Locke has registered double-digit scoring numbers in the last two outings for the Orange & Black, including a 10-point, 6-rebound performance against Charlotte. She posted 13 points and eight boards in Saturday's win at Bethune-Cookman. The Bears have shot nearly 40 percent from the field and averaged better than 55 points per game (55.2) in five home outings this season, and are +1.6 in the rebounding column inside Hawkins Arena as well. The Yellow Jackets have captured 17 of the previous 23 meetings with Mercer in a series that dates all the way back to the 1979-90 campaign. Sunday's matchup will be the first meeting between the two sides in Macon since Tech posted a 70-65 overtime victory over MU on Nov. 24, 1997.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH
Georgia Tech (8-0) has won each of its first eight games of the season, including a 78-75 home win over previously unbeaten Mississippi State on Wednesday in Atlanta. The Bulldogs shot 54.5 percent from the field in that contest, but Georgia Tech turned the ball over just six times while also canning a dozen 3-pointers. Three players average double-digit scoring numbers for Georgia Tech through eight games, including freshman guard Dani Carnegie who has come off of the bench in all eight games, but has still managed to register a team-best 14.4 points per game. Junior Kara Dunn has turned in 13.4 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds as well. The Yellow Jackets average 28.5 shot attempts per game from the perimeter, but have done a bulk of their damage this season in the rebounding column (+10.0/game). Georgia Tech has also gotten more tan 34 points per game from its bench, while also showing the nation's 9^th-best assist/turnover ratio.

ON DECK
The Bears will get a 6-day hiatus from competition before resuming their 2024-25 schedule on December 15 with a quick trip to New Orleans, La., to take on Tulane (3-4). Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET at Avron B. Fogleman Arena.
