
Bears Edge Out 4-3 Win At Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In the deciding match, Mercer freshman Tea Zivic defeated Samford's Meredith Taylor, 7-6 (4), 6-3 to clinch the 4-3 win for the Bears over Samford Friday evening in Birmingham, Alabama.
In doubles action, the team's split the first two matches as first Samford's Alexis Lopez and Noelle Mauro defeated Mercer's Teodora Ristic and Marina de Diego Quinones, 6-2. Then, Mercer forced a deciding third doubles match on court three as Lea Falentin and Emilia Cosatto defeated Samford's Emily Surcey and Grace Keller, 6-2.
The deciding doubles match was close, but ultimately Mercer's Mariella Minetti and Tea Zivic won 7-5 over Margaret Jaraczewski and Lauren Waddles of Samford to give the Bears the doubles point and 1-0 lead in the conference match.
Teodora Ristic got things going in singles play for the Bears by winning her match 6-1, 6-2 over Alexis Lopez to put Mercer up 2-0.
Samford would respond by winning the next two singles matches to tie the match at two. Samford's best singles player in Emily Surcey improved to 8-3 in singles matches with a 6-3, 6-4 win over de Diego Quinones. Then, Ally Hayduck of Samford defeated Falentin in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
On court five, Samford's Margaret Jaraczewski defeated Mercer's Emilia Cosatto, 6-2, 6-3 to put Samford one point away from clinching the match with two matches to go.
Mariella Minetti's match went three sets versus Samford's Noelle Mauro and Mauro had Samford one set away from clinching the match. However Manetti fought back winning the second set before a having a strong third set to earn the 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to keep the Bears alive and even the score at three.
In the deciding match between Zivic and Samford's Meredith Taylor, the first set went to a tiebreaker where Zivic won 7-6 (4). Zivic closed out the match in the second set winning it 6-3 to give the Bears the conference win and a 2-0 start to SoCon play.
Mercer will take a short break from conference play as the Bears will play another match on the road at Alabama State next Tuesday, March 19 at noon.
