MACON – Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole was presented with the prestigious Golden Eagle Award by the Boy Scouts of America Central Georgia Council. The award is given to honor community leaders who provide outstanding civic service to adults and youth in the area and lift future generations of young people.
Â
Cole was honored on Thursday evening in a special ceremony alongside philanthropist Dr. Margie Bryant at the Monroe County Convention Center. The award presentation was preceded by a keynote address from Casey Cagle who served as the Lieutenant Governor of Georgia from 2007 to 2019.
Â
"I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this honor from the Boy Scouts of America, and will continue to cherish it for years to come," Cole said. "I am proud that I have the opportunity to serve the Middle Georgia community each and every day."
Â
In the midst of his 14th year as Mercer's director of athletics, Cole preceded his current post as a member of Georgia's House of Representatives from 2004-10, serving as the legislative voice under the Gold Dome for the constituents of House District 125 which includes Jasper County and parts of Monroe, Jones and Lamar counties. His legislative duties included membership on the Appropriations Committee, as well as positions on the Rules, Judiciary Non-Civil and Natural Resources committees.
Â
Cole is an active community leader throughout the state, serving as a board member for local chapters of the Salvation Army and Stratford Academy, while also holding a membership with the Monroe County Development Authority. A graduate of Leadership Georgia, he is also a member of Forsyth United Methodist Church.
Â
Jim is married to the former Gaylyn Lawson, a coach and former teacher at Macon's Stratford Academy. After retiring from education, she is now a licensed real estate agent for Fickling and Company. The couple resides in Forsyth and have two children, Caroline, a first-year student at Mercer Law, and Lawson, a sophomore business administration student and a pitcher on the Mercer baseball team.
