GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Jackson Cherry's solo home run in the third inning boosted the Bears (14-7, 1-0 SoCon) toward a 5-2 victory over UNC Greensboro (11-10, 0-1 SoCon) on Friday afternoon.

Junior Colton Cosper (2-1) got the win for Mercer. The left-hander went nine innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Jackson Cherry put Mercer on the board first with a two-out solo home run off sophomore Julien Peissel in the third inning.

The Spartans failed to push any runs across before the Bears built on their lead in the sixth inning. Mercer pushed across a run on senior Noah Best's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Bears.

The Bears scored once in the seventh inning on an RBI single off the bat of junior Bradley Frye.

Mercer held the Spartans without a run before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Bears scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Carter Sanford, bringing the Mercer advantage to 4-0.

The Bears kept UNC Greensboro off the board before building their lead to 5-0 the following inning. Mercer scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Conner Todaro. UNC Greensboro put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Bears held on for the 5-2 win.
