MACON – Officials from the Mercer Athletic Foundation announced Monday that the Christy Cantrell Johnston Women's Soccer Fund has been established to enhance the program's operating budget. The endowment was made possible with a generous gift from the Cantrell family.
Â
"The women's soccer program at Mercer has had a positive impact on my life and my family, and I am honored to be able to establish this endowment to impact the current and future generations of Lady Bears," Cantrell Johnston said.
Â
A 4-time scholar-athlete for the Orange & Black from 2001-05, Cantrell Johnston played in 70 games for Mercer and helped provide the foundation of success for the program over the next decade. The Macon native closed out her career with seven assists, including four during her freshman campaign on campus.
Â
Prior to her collegiate career, Cantrell Johnston was one of the most decorated athletes in Stratford Academy history, and was a mainstay on four-straight state championship teams (1998-2001) while also starring for both softball and basketball state championship runs as well. She has already been inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame and the Stratford Academy Athletic Hall of Fame.
Â
"This endowment will continue to grow and will impact generation after generation of Mercer women's soccer players," said Brian Gerrity, Deputy Athletics Director and Executive Director of the MAF. "I hope to see other women's soccer alumni and friends support this fund."
