CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Fifth-seeded Chattanooga rolled to a quick doubles point, and then tacked up three quick singles points, to post a 4-0 win over fourth-seeded Mercer in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon at The Champions Club.
The setback snapped the lid on a seven-win campaign for the Bears (7-12) who captured six of seven dual matchups from mid-March to early April on the way to a third-place finish in the league's final regular season standings. The Mocs (10-14) used Thursday's win to avenge a regular season loss to Mercer just more than a week ago.
Chattanooga needed just more than 30 minutes to pick up doubles victories on Court Nos. 2 and 3, and stretched its lead on the team scoreboard out to 2-0 when Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez finished off a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles just less than 90 minutes later. Cortland Grove padded the lead out to 3-0 with a straight-sets win on Court No. 3 as well.
Determined to go down swinging, the Bears captured the opening set on three other singles courts, but the Mocs stepped up to the challenge. Ryan Mudre rebounded from an opening-set loss to Samuel Barrow on Court No. 4, but clinched the final outcome for UTC with a 6-2 decision in the second set and a 6-4 win in the third frame.
