JOHNSON CITY, TENN. --The Mercer Bears (15-13, 1-3 SoCon) reached a 4-1 lead in the third inning but fell to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers (19-9, 4-3 SoCon) 6-5 on Friday.

Sophomore Jess Ackerman took the loss on the mound for Mercer. Colton Cosper pitched the first six innings and only gave up one run through five.

At the plate, the Bears were led by junior Jackson Cherry, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Senior Carter Sanford put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Brandon Prince also chipped in for Mercer, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding two walks and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bears got on the board immediately with Cherry hitting a one-out solo home run off junior Carter Fink.

The Bears then held the Buccaneers scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. which brought the Bears lead to 4-0.

East Tennessee State narrowed Mercer's lead to 4-1 before the Bears stretched the advantage to 5-1 in the sixth inning. The Bears scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Sanford. The Bears were unable to hold the lead, as East Tennessee State scored five times over the remaining three innings to grab the 6-5 win.
