MACON -- Senior Carter Sanford went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Mercer Bears (26-27, 6-14 SoCon) in an 8-3 loss to the Citadel Bulldogs (21-31, 3-18 SoCon) on Saturday.

Senior Wesley Franklin got the ball to start for Mercer and took the loss. The right-hander went eight innings, giving up five runs, all of them earned, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Offensively, the Bears were led by Sanford, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Freshman Ely Brown went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Ty Dalley also helped out for Mercer, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bears scored two runs on Sanford's homer in the second inning and put one more on the board in the third inning, but did not score the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a 3-RBI home run. Another homer in the eighth inning gave them a 5-2 lead, and three runs in the ninth extended the lead to the final score of 8-3.
