Baseball Heads To Conference-Leading Samford

MACON – Mercer (23-20, 4-7 SoCon) travels to Birmingham this weekend to play Samford (29-15, 10-2 SoCon). The Bulldogs currently lead the Southern Conference with three weeks of the regular season remaining.

Samford is 20-7 at home this season and has won seven of the last ten meetings with Mercer. In last season's series in Macon, the two teams combined for 25 home runs across three games.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARS

Mercer hosted Georgia State on Wednesday afternoon in a rematch of a 6-4 loss in Atlanta early this season. The Bears got off to a hot start, scoring five runs in the first inning. They held the Panthers to one run until the fourth inning. With an 8-1 lead, the Bears gave up three runs in the frame. Both teams scored one in the fifth, Mercer's a solo home run from Noah Best. The two teams alternated runs through the eighth, but GSU ended the game the way Mercer started it - with five runs. MU stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth trailing 14-11 and got two on base through a hit by pitch and three strikeouts to end the game.

SCOUTING REPORT

Samford has spent the majority of the season at the top of the Southern Conference standings. The Bulldogs defeated then-No. 10 Kentucky and lost by one run to then-No. 11 Alabama in Birmingham in early April. They defeated North Alabama 19-10 in Florence on Wednesday. The team has yet to play UNC Greensboro or Wofford, two teams that have spent time as the No. 2 team in the Southern Conference this season. SAM's John Anderson leads the conference in batting average (.400) and in doubles hit (16). Pitcher Michael Ross has the lowest ERA (2.67) and opposing batting average (.218) in the SoCon.

LOOKING AHEAD

Mercer will return home to host the last midweek home game of the season on Tuesday, May 7 vs. Kennesaw State at 6 p.m.
