GREENVILLE, S.C. – A testament to a championship mindset both inside the playing arena, as well as the classroom, the Mercer athletics department sent 256 student-athletes to the Southern Conference 2023-24 Academic Honor Roll on Thursday afternoon, the league office announced. A total of 2,473 student-athletes from the 10 member institutions and nine associate members earned the distinction.
Â
The Academic Honor Roll originated in 1988-89 when SoCon athletics directors established the award as a path to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher for the academic year.
Â
Mercer's football team sent 68 student-athletes to Thursday's listing, while the baseball team had 38 student-athletes lauded with the honor. Six other teams sent 10 or more student-athletes to the distinguished list. A total of 78 Bears raked in the Commissioners Medal as well which is awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the academic year.
Â
Student-athletes in the sports of lacrosse and beach volleyball were not eligible for the SoCon Academic Honor Roll. Men's lacrosse is an associate member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, while women's lacrosse and beach volleyball compete as associate members of the Big South Conference and Sun Belt Conference, respectively.
Â
The Bears were lauded for their academic prowess late last month as well when the department picked up the SoCon's Barrett-Bonner Award for the ninth-straight year. That accolade is presented to SoCon school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll.
Â
Mercer placed 78.5 percent of its student-athletes on the 2023-24 SoCon Honor Roll.
