MACON – Former Mercer baseball player Colby Thomas has been named the 2024 Oakland Athletics Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America, the publication announced today. Thomas, a third-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, played for the Double-A Midland RockHounds and the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators this summer and was one of only six minor leaguers to hit 30 or more home runs.Â
Â
Thomas is currently ranked as the number seven prospect in the A's organization according to MLB Pipeline. Over 132 games in his two minor league stops this season, Thomas generated a slash line of .277/.342/.563. His 31 home runs ranked sixth across all of Minor League Baseball, while his 44 doubles put him one shy of the minor league lead.Â
Â
The outfielder's standout 2024 campaign came on the heels of a 2023 season in which he slashed .286/.351/.493 in his first season of professional baseball. In 126 games across Single-A Stockton and High-A Lansing, Thomas clubbed 18 homers and 39 doubles, driving in 82 runs.Â
Â
Thomas was standout performer for the Bears from 2020-23, earning All-Southern Conference recognition in 2022 by hitting .325 with 17 homers and 14 doubles. The Valdosta native was a SoCon All-Freshman Team pick in 2021, posting a .247 batting average with 23 extra-base hits. Over his three seasons in Macon, Thomas played in 117 games (115 starts), compiling a career batting average of .291 with 72 extra-base hits, 105 RBI and 113 runs scored.Â
