MERCER/WOFFORD SERIES
The Bears have captured the last three games of their 16-game-old series with Wofford, including a 42-7 victory over the Terriers the last time the two teams met in Spartanburg. The rivalry between the two sides began in 1915, and the squads met five more times sporadically until MU disbanded its program after the 1941 season. Mercer dropped its first seven meetings (2014-20) with the Terriers as a member of the Southern Conference before snapping that skid with a 45-14 home win in 2021.
SCOUTING WOFFORD | ||
Wofford returned 16 starters (7 on offense and defense) and 26 other letterwinners from last season's squad that posted a 2-9 record. Nine Terriers landed a spot on the Preseason All-Southern Conference Team, including a league-best five first-teamers. The Terriers, who enjoyed a bye week last week, have captured two of their first three outings this season, including a Week 2 win over then- No. 14 Richmond. Wofford dropped a tough 28-21 home setback to then-No. 13 William & Mary in its last action on September 14.
BEARS SEEKING BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY
This year's edition of the Bears is only the third team (1931, 2013) in the 50-plus year history of the program to begin a season with four-straight victories. A win against Wofford on Saturday would mark the best start in program history by 1/2 of a game. The 1931 team began its campaign with four-straight wins before settling for a tie at John Carroll. That squad rebounded, however, with a 25-7 win at Wofford a week later to improve to 5-0-1.
MERCER VS. RANKED TEAMS
Mercer is 10-23 over the last decade against nationally- ranked opponents, including a 10-19 mark against ranked FCS opponents. Six of the Bears' 10 wins against Top 25 FCS foes have come away from Macon (6-12 away vs. FCS), while the Orange & Black has also posted a quartet of wins against Top 10-ranked FCS opponents (4-6 vs. Top 10). Just more than one-third (7 of 19) of MU's losses to Top 25 FCS competition have come by seven or fewer points. |
