MACON – Mary Stoiana and Darja Vidmanova used Thursday's featured doubles matchup at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center to shake things up as the Southeastern Conference alums scored a major upset with a straight sets victory over top-seeded Maria Kozyreva and Iryna Shymanovich.
Â
Stoiana, a two-time SEC Player of the Year for Texas and A&M, and Vidmanova, a two-time national champion at Georgia, shocked one of the world's top 100 doubles teams with a 6-3 victory in the opening set, and then finished off the tournament's No. 1 seed with a 6-4 win in the second set. Kozyreva and Shymanovich rolled into Macon having already won two International Tennis Federation (ITF) doubles championships this year.
Â
All five of the seeded singles players in action on Thursday advanced, including top-seeded Renata Zarazua who eased past Venezuelan Sofia Cabezas Dominguez in straight sets. Eighth-seeded Olivia Gadecki rebounded from an opening-set loss to American Jessica Failla by capturing a 7-4 tiebreaker in the second set, before ousting Failla with a 6-4 decision in the third set.
Â
Australian Emerson Jones will battle Russian Anastasia Gasanova at 10 a.m. in the first of two seeded quarterfinal matchups on Friday at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center, while Zarazua and Gadecki will square off at approximately noon.
Â
The semifinal round of the doubles tournament will commence following the conclusion of singles play.
Â
The Mercer Tennis Classic, in partnership with the Macon Area Tennis Association and Macon-Bibb County, will run through Sunday, with all matches taking place at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
