Mercer Wraps Up Road Trip In Statesboro On Saturday Night

MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team will put the wraps on a three-game road trip on Saturday evening when the Bears make the short hop to Statesboro to lock horns with in-state nemesis Georgia Southern. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Hill Convocation Center.

Fans unable to make the trip to Statesboro can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the GSU athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcast live on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Senior Ariana Bennett scored a game-high 19 points on 8-for-10 field goal shooting to headline a balanced Mercer scoring attack as the Bears picked up their second road win of the season with a 78-68 win at Jackson State on Wednesday afternoon. Five different players tallied at least nine points for the Bears who shot nearly 63 percent from the field in the opening half and led for all but nine seconds of the high noon tilt.

ABOUT THE BEARS
Mercer (3-2) has shot a Southern Conference-best 35.5 percent from the perimeter through five outings, and will tote the league's top scoring defense (60.2 points/game allowed) into Saturday's tilt as well. Junior Micah O'Dell continues to pace the squad with 13.2 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting, but senior Nahawa Diarra is chipping in 11.0 points an outing while also pulling down a team-best 5.0 rebounds per game.

SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Eagles (1-3) have committed just 12.5 turnovers an outing (27^th NCAA) through four outings, while also netting nearly 22 free throw attempts per game. Nearly 42 percent (111-for-265) of Georgia Southern's shot attempts have come from behind the arc, but the Eagles have connected on just 27.0 percent of their 3-point shots. Regardless, GSU boasts three players with double-digit scoring averages, including McKenna Eddings who averages 14.0 points per game on 36.5 percent shooting. Fellow senior Shanti Simmons contributes 13.3 points and a team-best 5.0 boards an outing.

MERCER/JACKSON STATE SERIES
The Bears lead the 52-year-old series with Georgia Southern, 38-29, and will ride a six-game series win streak into Statesboro on Saturday. Five of Mercer's six victories in its active winning skein have come by double digits, including 20+-point wins on two of its last three meetings on GSU's campus. The Bears trailed by one point, 52-51, after three periods on their last trip to Statesboro early in the 2018-19 season, but got the better end of a 28-20 fourth quarter scoring disparity to ice the outcome. Saturday's matchup will mark the first meeting between the two sides since MU's 62-52 home win on Dec. 7, 2019.
