Bears Host Gardner-Webb On Monday Night

MACON – The Mercer women's basketball team will wrap up a short two-game home stand on Monday evening when the Bears lace up to welcome Gardner-Webb to Macon for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Hawkins Arena. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.

Fans unable to make the trip to Middle Georgia can still follow the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the MU athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcasted live on ESPN+ with Billy Andrews and Bill Connelly handling the call. Rick Cameron and the rest of the Mercer Sports Network will call all of the action as well, and fans can listen to that broadcast on The Creek 100.9 FM, or by visiting Sportsmic.

LAST TIME OUT
Hot-handed Clemson shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the opening half, but it was a 13-5 run to close the third quarter that helped the Tigers pull away for good on the way to a 72-51 victory over a feisty Mercer squad on Thursday evening in Hawkins Arena. Newcomer Micah O'Dell registered a team-best 16 points on 50 percent (6-for-12) field goal shooting, while also adding a defensive rebound.

ABOUT THE BEARS
Mercer (1-1) is a Southern Conference-best +7.50 in the turnover column through two outings, and committed just six in Thursday's contest with the Clemson – the fewest for the Orange & Black since tallying just three turnovers against Samford on March 2, 2024. Micah O'Dell is averaging a team-best 12.0 points per game thus far, while fellow newcomer Remi-Hope Drantmann has highlighted the rebounding column with 4.0 boards an outing while also connecting on 50 percent of her field goal attempts.

SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2) returned just four letterwinners (no starters) of last year's squad that posted an 11-18 mark and a sixth-place finish in the final Big South standings. Gardner-Webb has already dropped two road outings this season – a 58-47 setback at Queens and a 91-68 loss to West Georgia – but is averaging 23 free throw attempts per game, including a 14-for-24 showing in the loss to UWG. Returners Nyla Walker and Jaelyn Acker top the scoring column for GWU with 14.5 and 9.5 points, respectively, while fellow returner Amira Ofunniyin pulls down a team-best 6.5 rebounds per contest.

MERCER/GARDNER-WEBB SERIES
Gardner-Webb leads the all-time series, 7-5, but Mercer snapped a seven-game skid in the series with a 63-50 road win over the Runnin' Bulldogs in the last meeting between the two clubs on Nov. 21, 2021. The Bears will look to break a four-game home losing streak in the series on Monday as well.

ON DECK
The Bears will open up a three-game road trip on Thursday when they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to take on Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest in LJVM Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
