NEW ORLEANS – Fresh off a 2024 campaign that produced the highest win total in the 13-year history of the program, the Mercer beach volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the race for the Sun Belt Conference regular season title in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches.
Â
Two-time defending league champion Georgia State raked in all six available first-place votes and 48 points to top the listing, while Coastal Carolina (40 points) and UNC Wilmington (33) occupied the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Points were awarded on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, and coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
Â
The Bears return nearly intact from last season's squad that posted a program-best 17 victories, including a run of six-straight triumphs that closed out the month of March. Mercer finished fifth amid the then-8-team Sun Belt Conference last season with a 2-4 league record.
Â
MU will lift the lid on its newest campaign this weekend when the squad packs up its show and heads to DeLand, Fla., for the Stetson Spring Fling. The Orange & Black is scheduled to take on the host Hatters, as well as Eckerd, on Friday, and will do battle with Nebraska and Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
