DELAND, Fla. – Red hot Mercer tacked up victories in three of the first four pairs on the way to a 3-2 victory over Nebraska, then knocked off Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin on the way to a perfect Saturday at the Stetson Spring Fling in Central Florida.
The 4-1 shellacking of the Lumberjacks (2-2) in Saturday's late contest marked the third-straight victory for the Bears (3-1) whose only loss in the Stetson Spring Fling came at the hands of the 20th-ranked and host Hatters. It was MU's first-ever win over the Huskers, and the first win over a Power 4 opponent since knocking off both South Carolina and LSU in 2014.
Mercer keyed both wins with a perfect day from its No. 4 Pair of Kathryn Corbett and Nicole O'Mara, as well as its No. 5 pair of Reese Hood and Grace Rathburn.
Corbett/O'Mara registered the most lopsided triumph in MU's win over Nebraska via a 21-15, 21-18 ousting of Nebraska's Skyler Pierce and Laney Choboy. They also eased past Stephen F. Austin's Olivia Zeigler and Ashley Boswell, 21-12 and 21-15. Hood/Rathburn delivered the match-clinching victory against the Cornhuskers via a 22-20, 21-17 defeat of Maisie Boesiger and Taylor Landfair. The pair also rebounded from an opening-set loss in their matchup against Stephen F. Austin's Hailey Prodan and Meagan Ledbetter with a 21-16 win in the second set and a 17-15 triumph in the deciding third set.
The Bears are back in action again next weekend, February 28-March 1, when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., for the UNF Duuuval Duals. Mercer is scheduled to take on North Florida, Chattanooga, Jacksonville and Saint Leo at the two-day event.
