
Southern Miss Ousts Beach Bears From Sun Belt Tournament

FOLEY, Ala. – Fourth-seeded Mercer registered a pair of straight-sets victories on Court Nos. 3 and 4 to grab a quick 2-0 lead, but sixth-seeded Southern Miss rallied back with a trio of three-set wins to eliminate the Bears from the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Foley Event Center.

The setback capped a historical season for Mercer (24-13) who registered a school-record win total for the second-straight year, while also sending two pairs to all-conference laurels for the first time in seven years. It was the second win of the day for the Eagles (14-24) who will face third-seeded UNC Wilmington later Friday afternoon.

The Bears raked in the opening set on all five courts to start the matchup with USM, and then took a quick 1-0 lead when Sydney Benson and Kate Hardie finished off a 21-17, 21-17 triumph at No. 3 Pairs. Kathryn Corbett and Nicole O'Mara gave the Bears a 2-0 edge minutes later thanks to a 21-13, 25-23 win on Court No. 4.
