HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Mercer's more-than 400 student-athletes continued to reap the rewards of their work ethic inside the classroom on Wednesday evening when the Bears were lauded as winners of the Southern Conference's Barrett-Bonner Award for the 10th-straight year.
Â
The honor was presented as part of the Honors Dinner that wrapped up the league's annual spring meetings at the Sonesta Resort in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The three-day meetings were attended by the institutional presidents and chancellors, athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives, as well as SoCon staff.
Â
The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the SoCon school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. The award was first presented in 1994 for the 1992-93 academic year. The award is named after Col. John G. Barrett, faculty athletics representative at VMI from 1965-87, and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, faculty athletics representative at Furman from 1968-90.
Â
Mercer placed 85 percent of its student-athletes on the 2023-24 SoCon Honor Roll.
Â
Mercer has won the award each year it has been eligible since joining the conference prior to the 2014-15 academic year. MU's 10-year winning streak easily surpasses former SoCon member Davidson who collected the distinguished honor six-straight times from 2008-09 to 2013-14. Across the 32-year history of the award, Mercer and Davidson are the only schools to win the Barrett-Bonner Award on multiple occasions and have combined to capture the honor 30 times.
