MACON, Ga. - The Mercer volleyball team is set to open conference play this weekend in Hawkins Arena with the Tennessee squads of the Southern Conference. The Bears will face ETSU on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. and will welcome Chattanooga on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.
The Bears are coming off of an undefeated weekend at the Mercer Invitational, defeating UT Martin, North Dakota and West Georgia. Mercer is now 3-1 on the season inside Hawkins Arena and they look to add to their win column this weekend as they take on the Buccaneers and the Mocs. ETSU is currently third in the conference with an overall record of 6-5 on the season. The Buccaneers have wins over High Point, Cleveland State and most recently they took down powerhouse Virginia Tech in a 3-1 match. The Mocs sit right below the Buccaneers in the conference standings in fourth place with an overall record of 6-6. Chattanooga has picked up wins to UT Martin, Idaho, Norfolk State and UC Riverside with losses to Alabama, UCF and Jacksonville State.
Sophomore outside hitter for the Bears Sophia Henry surpassed the 100 kill mark this past weekend with 116 kills (2.83/set) on the season. Freshman outside hitter Charlotte Thompson and junior middle blocker Avery Wilks have been outstanding at the net for the Bears with 91 and 73 kills, respectively. Sammi Bergjans and Jessica Dunn have combined for 361 assists and sophomore libero Aubri Martin continues to be a rock in the back row for Mercer with 197 digs.
Friday night's match against Chattanooga will be Mercer's Yellow Game to raise awareness and support for Ali Waldon, who is currently battling osteosarcoma. There will be yellow ribbons and bracelets handed out during the match and chances to donate to assist Ali and her family in her fight. Both matches are free of charge and will not be streamed but there will be live stats available to follow along with.
